2025 Taiwanese American Small Business Gift Guide

Every holiday season, we return to this special tradition: gathering the makers, dreamers, and small business owners who infuse Taiwanese American creativity into their craft. What began years ago as a simple community roundup has grown into one of our most beloved annual traditions—a celebration of food, art, care, storytelling, and the people whose work reflects the textures of our diaspora.

This year’s Taiwanese American Gift Guide celebrates craftsmanship rooted in heritage and imagination. Featuring creators across food, literature, art, jewelry, home goods, wellness, and more, the guide spotlights founders who are reviving traditional techniques, reimagining pantry staples, uplifting our languages, and honoring the flavors and sensibilities we grew up with.

Some launched their businesses after years in other careers; others are multi-generational stewards of culinary or artistic practices. Many are first-time founders, independent artists, or immigrant-family small businesses driven by love for culture and community. All share a commitment to making Taiwanese and Taiwanese American stories visible through taste, texture, scent, design, and care.

  • When you shop from this guide, you support:
    Taiwanese American entrepreneurs and artists
  • Women, queer, and immigrant-owned businesses
  • Community-rooted creators committed to ethical sourcing and thoughtful production
  • Diasporic storytelling in all its forms

This year’s collections span Bites & Sips, Precious, Beautiful Things, Rituals of Care, Artists & Illustrators, and Ong Lai 鳳梨 The Best—curated to help you discover new favorites, support local makers, and share the warmth of Taiwanese creativity with loved ones near and far.

Thank you for showing up year after year to uplift our community.

KIUKIU

About KIUKIU: “Hi! I’m John, founder of KiuKiu, a Taiwanese-inspired food brand bringing chewy, rice-based foods to everyday American pantries. I was born and raised in Taiwan, where many of my family were rice farmers, and where I fell in love with the bouncy “QQ” textures found in foods like mochi, boba, and rice cakes. After moving to the U.S., I continued to make all of my favorite foods with rice flour, such as cakes, cookies, even pasta, to recreate that satisfying chew I missed. But I also noticed that there was a huge lack of rice-based pantry staples in grocery stores (let alone of the chewy variety!) other than mochi ice cream. After six years of saving up in tech, I finally left my AI job in 2025 to start KiuKiu. Our first product line is Mochi Pancake & Waffle Mix, available in Ube, Pandan Coconut, and Black Sesame, made with California-grown rice flour. KiuKiu celebrates rice not just as an “alternative flour”, but as the foundation for modern pantry staples rooted in Taiwanese heritage!”

Featured Product: The Black Sesame Mochi Pancake and Waffle Mix, made from California-grown rice and naturally gluten-free. The Black Sesame is freshly roasted and finely ground to unlock a velvety, nutty aroma. Serving suggestion: Butter, maple syrup, and your favorite fruits (maybe a jam from Yun Hai?!). | Buy It Here

I wanted each cookie to spark a little joy — to be something that not only delights the taste buds but also brings people together. Whether it’s a gift, a family project, or a moment shared over tea, my cookies are made to connect hearts, one bite at a time.”

Chocovivo LA

About Chocovivo:

In 2009, our journey began at one farmer’s market stand in Los Angeles, CA, stone-grinding cacao nibs from bean-to-bar. This marked the inception of our connection with the ancient art of cacao cultivation and our enduring partnership with our visionary head farmer, Vicente Guiterrez, and the Jesus Maria Plantation in Tabasco, MX—a region steeped in the historical legacy of Mayan cacao. Through the last fourteen years, we’ve fostered a sustainable stream of jobs and created the first women’s cooperative of cacao farmers in Mexico. This convergence of purpose and empowerment lies at the very core of our enterprise.”

Featured Product: The Taiwanese Roselle Dark Chocolate Bar is crafted to bring forward the vibrant, unique flavors of Taiwan’s version of hibiscus. Unlike its Mexican counterpart, Taiwanese hibiscus offers a fruitier, floral profile, balancing natural sweetness with a touch of floral tartness—a flavor often enjoyed as a candied treat across Taiwan. | Buy It Here

Yun Hai

About Yun Hai: “Yun Hai 雲海® offers a selection of premium ingredients for Taiwanese and Chinese cooking. We source directly from artisans, farms, and soy sauce breweries in Taiwan. Terrain, technique, history, and humanity come together in the traditional foods we distribute. Our team helps small food businesses based in Taiwan prepare their product for commercial import to an eager audience in the United States. We intend to bring visibility to the culture, cuisine, and independence of Taiwan while offering a selection of fine and fancy ingredients for Taiwanese and Chinese cooking.”

Featured Product: The Yun Hai Selection Dried Fruit Gift Box includes one bag of each of our Taiwanese dried fruits: Golden Diamond Pineapple, Irwin Mango, Wax Apple, Green Mango, and Pearl Guava. This product is part of a line of dried fruit that we created via crowdfunding on Kickstarter to support Taiwanese farmers that are vulnerable to trade volatility between Taiwan and China. We started this project in March of 2021, when China banned imports of Taiwan pineapples nearly overnight, wiping out 90% of Taiwan’s export market and leaving farmers scrambling to find buyers. Wax Apples were banned as recently as September 2021. We work directly with farmers and farmer-owned co-ops to source, purchase, and package the fruit, with the intent to ease at least some of the dependency on trade with China. | Buy It Here

De-Tea

About De-Tea: “I’m Chris, founder of de-. I founded a tea brand solely selling decaf teas and decaffeinated with my proprietary chemical free process for people who love tea but are sensitive to caffeine. I grew up drinking tea with my grandparents, but as I got older, caffeine started disrupting my sleep and having a cutoff time at 2pm so the brand was born to solve this problem. Unlike typical decaf teas, ours taste just like authentic tea without taste difference while decaffeinated to the level without affecting your sleep. My mission is simple: Drink great tea, anytime, without the cutoff time.”

Featured Product: The Decaf Osmanthus Black Tea is a poetic union of Honey-Fragrance Black Tea (蜜香紅茶) from Nantou and hand-picked dried osmanthus blossoms from Shiding, Taiwan. Dream Fields Indigo

About Dream Fields Indigo: “My name is Nina, and I am from Taiwan. With a passion for traveling and exploring new things, I re-examined my career path after a period of rich overseas experiences. In 2014, after working and living in London for a year and a half, and traveling through Europe for three months, my journey into indigo dyeing began to take shape. I found my life’s calling through my mother’s handmade dyed fabrics. Every time I see a piece of fabric naturally dyed with indigo, it sparks my endless enthusiasm for the craft. This passion led me to deeply explore Taiwan’s traditional indigo dyeing techniques.”

Featured Product: Indigo-Dyed Fabric Earrings are a unique design that combines silver jewelry from the Miao 苗族, a minority ethnic group in China, with distinctly Eastern-style indigo-dyed fabric, creating a very unique and personal piece. The Miao are renowned for their exquisite handicrafts and rich cultural heritage, with their silver jewelry primarily being handmade. The craftsmanship includes a combination of hammering, forging, carving, and inlaying, believed to bring good fortune and ward off evil. Paired with hand-dyed fabric using botanical dyes, it’s rare to find two pieces that are exactly the same. The fusion of these two traditional crafts makes these earrings, necklaces, and rings a one-of-a-kind source of style. | Buy It Here

Rituals of Care

Zen Garden Aromas

About Zen Garden Aromas: “Zen Garden Aromas is a family-owned, AAPI-owned business founded in Rockville, Maryland, by Melody and Dennis, a Taiwanese-American husband-and-wife team. Originally from San Jose, California, Melody is a physician trained in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology, now practicing in Maryland. After more than a decade of rigorous medical training, her days were filled with long shifts, constant handwashing, and rushing home to care for the family. In search of a creative outlet beyond medicine, she longed for a way to cultivate new passions while finding moments of peace amid the chaos of daily life while raising two young children. Drawing on her Taiwanese heritage and her upbringing in an immigrant household, Melody longed to preserve and pass down her cultural traditions to the next generation. She envisioned a line of Asian-inspired foaming hand soaps that would blend cultural tradition with everyday self-care. Meanwhile, Dennis—whose background spans culinary arts, photography, business administration, and the mortgage industry—recognized the potential in her vision and lack of authentic Asian cultural representation in the U.S. body care market. Thus, Zen Garden Aromas was launched in April 2025 from their shared desire to honor the beauty and richness of the Asian-American experience. While “Asian” is by no means a singular identity—encompassing countless languages, traditions, and histories—Zen Garden Aromas strives to handcraft innovative, authentic self-care products that elevate self-care, bring communities together, and offer meaningful sensory and cultural experiences regardless of background.”

Leudles Doodles

About Leudles Doodles: “I started this shop as a way to share and celebrate the culture and communities that I love, as a queer and neurodivergent Taiwanese-American artist based in the San Francisco Bay Area in California. My illustrations have been a way for me to heal and celebrate parts of my identity that I felt I had to mask in the past, and it’s allowed me to connect with those communities by helping others celebrate who they are too, through stickers, keychains, prints, and apparel. I made the difficult decision to leave my 9-5 tech job in early 2025 in order to focus on building my business (as an eldest daughter of immigrants, this was both terrifying and exciting!) and it has been such a joy, despite the challenges, to spend time creating and building community in a way that feels much more meaningful and rewarding than generating shareholder value. I love when I see someone’s face light up when they see themselves represented and celebrated in my art!”
