Taiwan Films at CAAMFest 2018

TaiwaneseAmerican.org is pleased to support the premier Asian American Film Festival in the San Francisco/Bay Area. CAAM Fest, the Center for Asian American Media’s annual festival features not only amazing works in film, TV, and digital media, but now also includes showcases in music and food. This year, their events and screenings are scheduled all throughout May to coincide with Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

We proudly co-present both a feature film about groundbreaking Taiwanese baseball player, Chien-Ming Wang, and a shorts program, which includes a coming-of-age story set in Taiwan. We invite you to join TaiwaneseAmerican.org in supporting the Asian and Asian American arts community by attending the films and festivities!

LATE LIFE: THE CHIEN-MING WANG STORY

AMC Kabuki 8, 1881 Post St, San Francisco, CA

New People Cinema, 1746 Post St, San Francisco, CA

With his signature sinker ball, Chien-Ming Wang was once considered one of Major League Baseball’s most promising pitchers. Wang established himself as the ace of the New York Yankees and as the pride of Taiwan. In 2008, just as his star was rising, he suffered a devastating injury that derailed his career. However, Wang refused to let this setback stop him from pitching. He refused to go home, and after regaining his health, he traveled the United States from team to team in the minor leagues during his quest to pitch again the majors.

A story much bigger than the game of baseball, LATE LIFE: THE CHIEN-MING WANG STORY follows the unbudging conviction of Wang and the unwavering support of family and friends. The emotionally charged sentiments from the people that are a part of his journey, along with the inspiringly candid confessions of Wang himself, come together to create a moving narrative that leaves you rooting for him. Director Frank W. Chen provides a unique look at the baseball through an Asian American lens to capture a narrative much grander than one of a Taiwanese baseball player in America, but rather a story of relentless resolve and love.
