Some familiar faces in this @gwuterp lineup!
Join George Washington University’s Taiwan Education & Research Program for a virtual symposium on Taiwanese and Taiwanese American identities through the multidisciplinary lens of the arts. The panel is open to the public; RSVP for the link!
Kicking off the symposium is a welcome keynote address by @taiwaneseam_org editor-in-chief Leona Chen, in which she will chart the formation of a distinctly Taiwanese American space, culture, and identity, as well as share her reflections from “growing up Taiwanese American” and her observations on its increasing legibility throughout the last decade.
The first panel will examine documentary film as a powerful medium to tell the stories and experiences of Taiwan. The second focuses on the role of visual arts and music in expressing the intersections of Taiwanese, American, and diasporic identities. The final roundtable will dive into how Taiwanese American stories are being documented, articulated, and preserved for future generations. This symposium invites scholars, artists, students, and the public to reflect on how art transcends borders and how communities far and wide can engage with these vital stories.

“This is not a typical book about Asian Americans— it does not read like an academic text. You don’t have to open a dictionary or read three articles just to understand a word. Instead, Louder Than the Lies uses accessible language and even visual charts to explore how Asian Americans are racialized in the United States.”⁠

Bing Wang (he/him) is a Taiwanese American journalist based in Chicago, IL. His main focuses are human rights, marginalized peoples, and issues regarding Asian Americans. He received a B.A. in Asian American Studies from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and an M.A. also in Asian American Studies from the University of California Los Angeles.⁠

Ellie Yang Camp is an artist and community educator from the San Francisco Bay Area. The proud daughter of Taiwanese immigrants, she has been a high-school history teacher, a full-time parent, a calligrapher, an anti-racist educator, and now an author. She has a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from UC Berkeley and a master’s degree in Education with an emphasis in Teaching of Social Studies from Stanford.⁠

Synopsis: What does it mean to be Asian American? How does our racialization in the United States shape our lives and our worldviews? With candor and care, Ellie Yang Camp, a Taiwanese American educator, offers a set of ideas and frameworks to guide us toward a more nuanced understanding of these questions. Drawing on her experiences and observations from history, conversations with Asian American peers, and lessons derived from other people of color, Camp unpacks the confusing dynamics that underlie anti-Asian stigmas and stereotypes in the US. From the model minority myth to yellowface to anti-Blackness among Asian communities, Camp presses into hard questions and moments of discomfort, naming fears so that we might dispel them.

🤍: Common ideas about Taiwan—that it “split with China in 1949” or “sees itself as the true China”—fail to explain why the Taiwanese withstand pressure from the PRC to relinquish their democratic self-governance. Revolutionary Taiwan: Making Nationhood in a Changing World Order sheds light on this. Each chapter shows how democratization in Taiwan constituted a revolution, changing not just the form of government but also how Taiwanese people conceptualized the island, coming to see it a complete nation unto itself. At the same time, however, Beijing has blocked the “normal” endpoint of this revolution: an open declaration of statehood and welcome into the global community. Revolutionary Taiwan brings the Taiwan story to a general audience. It will appeal to students and readers interested in international relations, contemporary geopolitics, and East Asian Studies. Informed by years of academic research and life in Taiwan, this book provides an entry point to a remarkable place and people.

NEW: Our Food editor Tiffany Ran interviews Cat Cheng @itscatcheng @catsbakesny whom you may recognize as the bubbly, youngest contestant Netflix’s “Blue Ribbon Baking Championship.”⁠

Cat Cheng became a music teacher straight out of college, but found herself struggling to continue down that path despite devoting much of her life to the craft. When COVID hit, she, like many, took to baking as a hobby and a distraction. But her skills quickly flourished and she saw the potential for baking to become a small business. Within a few short years, she launched Cat’s Bakes, a home baking business, and made her TV debut this year as the youngest contestant on Netflix’s new baking show, “Blue Ribbon Baking Championship.” At age 27, Cheng has undergone a career reinvention, overcoming the “feeling dumb” part of the journey and embracing newfound creativity and potential for future collaborations. ⁠

"I’m super excited about offering prepared food for people to purchase that’s ready to go. One of the core missions of our little shop is to offer food that you can buy using EBT. That’s just, you know, with the people of Chinatown in mind. ⁠

I want to sell produce from some of my former farmers market neighbors. Once we are established and have the routine down, I want to invite friends to do pop-ups after hours. The plan is to have friends get involved and share our space with our community. We eventually want to host produce distributions for free food. That is something I’m going to set up with my friends who run a non-profit. And we’ll have a takeout window feature. ⁠

We will have our black sesame noodles with pickles and we’ll be able to offer more protein options, whether it’s pork meatballs or braised tofu. We’ll have our rainbow zhou (congee) with various toppings. We’ll also have pre-packed cold dish sides. There’ll be a wood ear mushroom side, which we haven’t sold before. We’ll have a bunch of different, wonderful sides and pickled things that I’m excited about. My mom is the snack queen and I’m sure she’ll want to do things like peanuts and anchovies. She’s also very wild and hard to plan with sometimes so we’ll have Peggy’s Specials here and there. Working with our strengths and weaknesses, right?"⁠
