Accepting Applications for 2015 TACL Summer Political Internship Program

Posted on Monday, January 5th, 2015 at 7:19 pm.

Written by Kristina

Since 1992, the Taiwanese American Citizens League (TACL) Political Internship Program (PIP) has been TACL’s flagship internship program, demonstrating TACL’s commitment to civic participation. PIP’s mission is to empower the best and brightest students to make an impact in our community through civic engagement. We aim to foster the next generation of leaders and increase Taiwanese American representation in our country’s crucial decision-making processes.

The program places college students in local and federal elected officials’ offices for a summer internship that emphasizes identity and community impact while gaining leadership and networking experience. The eight week Washington, D.C. program includes:

• Internship: Full-time placement in a Congressional office to learn the inner workings of the political process
• Workshops: Two-day orientation and sessions throughout the summer on leadership, identity, policy, and networking
• Advocacy: Summer-long intern group project and culminating lobby visits on an issue important to the TA community
• Mentorship: Meaningful one-on-one relationship with an experienced mentor

All college students interested in Taiwanese American issues — regardless of previous political experience, major, or career goals — may apply.

We're honored to share this family narrative by Be We're honored to share this family narrative by Beia Giebel @beiaqr - while attending a government-run language program for compatriot youth in 2018, her parents visited Green Island to probe for more information about her gonggong (grandfather), who'd been a political prisoner, unjustly accused of communist sympathies under Taiwan's martial law period.

"My departure from my grandparents’ political identity and ideologies is one that I still grapple with today. Like many other third-generation waishengren, I have only witnessed a democratic, independently governed Taiwan, and that is where my familiarity lies. Furthermore, as a second-generation immigrant to the United States, my diasporic identity is rooted solely in Taiwan, absent of any longing for the mainland. For certain, my grandparents would not have used the label of Taiwanese or Taiwanese-American like I do today, let alone organize in student associations that sport these same titles."

"Over the next week, I took my parents and four different friends to see it with me three more times. I admit that, in retrospect, that was kind of an overload, but I had never been more excited to share a movie with anyone else, nor more convinced that this film was a necessity, something that was going to change the world like it had changed me."

"Bitter Medicine" is Taiwanese American author Mia Tsai's @mia.tsai.books debut speculative novel. In this inspired contemporary fantasy, a Chinese immortal and a French elf navigate romance, family loyalty, and workplace demands.

"One Day" is the latest from beloved picture book and YA author Joanna Ho @joannahowrites -- a tender ode from mother to son that weaves in nuanced themes of positive masculinity.

And - from our archives - a 2007 article noting the beginning of a new generation of Taiwanese American writers. We couldn't have known then (though we did dream!) how much the writing and publishing community would flourish in the 15+ years since. We are so proud to chart these milestones and to offer them as hope for all of the other writers, creatives, and artists searching for a way to share their stories, too.

Writing is often lamented as a solitary pursuit, and it is even more so for those writing from marginal, erased, or fraught spaces. We hope this growing cohort of friends can become a wellspring of comfort, camaraderie, and solidarity as we continue to write stories that tell the truths of who we are. #taiwaneseamerican #asianamerican #asianamericanwriters

This week, we'll commemorate the 76th anniversary This week, we'll commemorate the 76th anniversary of the 228 Massacre and the period of political terror that followed in Taiwan. To help our community and friends understand the human cost of the White Terror, community partners have made free virtual screenings of two documentaries, ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE and TASTE OF WILD TOMATO, available for a limited time with English subtitles.

TASTE OF WILD TOMATO tends to the deep scars of the witnesses and survivors of 228 as well as their descendants. "While no singular anecdote or film can fully capture the tragedy of the White Terror," director LAU shared, "I wanted to treat each individual's memory as vital and worth sharing and preserving with dignity and care."

New from @taiwanplus -- an animated show cleverly shining a light on the subtleties that define Taiwan and shape everyday life there through the lens of a third-culture Taiwanese American.

“A lot of our show came from real conversations about how Taiwan is,” said co-creator Michael Lalo Wong, who went from being an outsider to becoming Taiwanese to falling in love with Taiwan. As for many other Taiwanese who grew up American, his was a journey of finding that connection, realizing the myth of summer visits and family customs and embedding them into his identity. It is all a part of carving out a “third culture” and sculpting one’s multi-cultural identity.

For the wealth of subjects that co-creators Wong and Hanley were able to include in the 10 episodes, there were plenty more themes or storylines they considered but ultimately left out. Among them were Taiwan’s typhoons, cross-cultural family drama, political issues, and the complexity of Taiwanese identity. “Taiwanese culture is actually a mix of cultures,” said Wong, noting its Indigenous influences and Chinese heritage from various provinces.

Many of those topics came with particular intricacies and nuances that would detract from what Wong and Hanley had intended to create. For them, “The Jennie Show” is a “love letter to Taiwan through the form of comedy,” said Wong.
