Taiwanese American Author Julie Wu Speaks on "The Third Son" Novel

Julie plans to talk about how her experiences as a second generation Taiwanese American immigrant led her to becoming an author of Taiwanese historical novels. Her speech will be presented in English and facilitated in Taiwanese or Mandarin. A small reception will follow the speech, with an opportunity to purchase Julie’s novel “The Third Son” and have book signings.

Julie Wu’s debut novel, “The Third Son” (Algonquin Books) was listed as one of 10 riveting reads of May 2013 by O, The Oprah Magazine. Kirkus Reviews calls “The Third Son” an “alluring story that hits all the right emotional buttons and maintains readers’ empathy from the first page to the last.” The Taipei Times calls it “the best novel featuring Taiwan I’ve ever read… a fantastically good read.”

Julie was the recipient of a 2012 Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship. Her short fiction has won honorable mention in the 2010 Lorian Hemingway Short Story Contest and has been published in Columbia Magazine. Also a physician, she has published creative nonfiction in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Julie earned a B.A. in Literature from Harvard University and spent a year studying opera performance at Indiana University in Bloomington, many lifetimes ago.
