Admission is $20. 100% of proceeds will go directly to the teachers, singers, and instrumentalists who graciously allowed Jen Shyu to record and learn from them.

The full title of this seminar is “Hidden musical traditions of East Timor, Taiwan, & China & the context of improvisation and composition within.”

Performance artist & vocalist Jen Shyu will show some rare video footage of her research fieldwork recordings from East Timor, Taiwan, and China. She will also share some translations of these ancient songs’ lyrics that she recorded during her time in East Timor this past summer, which the elders believe have never been written down or translated into English.

After showing footage, she will perform on vocals, piano, Taiwanese moon guitar, er hu, and the “lakado,” a bamboo instrument from East Timor, playing some original compositions inspired by different aspects of this fieldwork over the years. It will be casual, open to Q/A, followed by a workshop (instrumentalists and vocalists should be prepared to play should they wish to).
