BOOK REVIEW -- ⁠ "In 2015, poet Michael Derrick BOOK REVIEW -- ⁠ "In 2015, poet Michael Derrick Hudson submitted his poem “The Bees” to various journals and magazines in hopes of being published. After the poem was passed over nearly forty times, Hudson decided to change his strategy. Only nine submissions later, “The Bees” was featured in that year’s edition of “The Best American Poetry” — but under the name Yi-Fen Chou. Hudson, a white man, had used a Chinese name as a pseudonym as a way to garner attention for his work. ⁠ In her debut novel, 'Disorientation,' Elaine Hsieh Chou uses a fictionalized version of Hudson’s tale as the core of her story. Pageantry can be a misunderstood pursuit, but we'v Pageantry can be a misunderstood pursuit, but we've been awed by what some (former) pageant stars in our community have done with their platforms (s/o to @stephanielintv Stephanie Lin, who represented Taiwan in the Miss Asian America / Miss Asian Global competition in 2015 and Miss Louisiana 2016 @justine_ker Justine Ker, the first Taiwanese or Asian American to represent Louisiana on the national stage). ⁠ ⁠ Last weekend, we were so pleased to meet Tiffany Chang, who was crowned the 2022 Miss Taiwanese American Pageant Queen.⁠ ⁠ For the talent portion of the pageant, Chang built a robot to walk the runway with her -- which, to Ho Chie's point, was "the most Stanford thing ever."⁠ ⁠ Chang is also an articulate, thoughtful, kind ambassador openly sharing her experience of developing and refining her own identity as a Taiwanese American. Josh Ku @therealkeanureeves - born in Queens to pa Josh Ku @therealkeanureeves - born in Queens to parents from southern Taiwan, and Trigg Brown @trigg.brown - a native Virginian whose mentor was a Taiwanese-American chef, forged a friendship over food—specifically, excellent tsang ying tou, or "flies’ head," a dish of chopped budding chives kissed with pork fat. Their obsession with Taiwanese food and culture propelled them to open Win Son @winsonbrooklyn together in 2016. The East Williamsburg restaurant quickly established itself as a destination and often incurs long waits for their vibrant and flavorful Taiwanese-American cuisine. Ku and Brown have teamed up with Cathy Erway @cathyerway - Taiwanese food expert and celebrated writer, to create this book which explores and celebrates the cuisine of Taiwan and its ever-simmering pot of creative influences. STUF United Fund's "UN Go!" program invites young STUF United Fund's "UN Go!" program invites young Taiwanese American professionals and college students to learn and better understand the issues that Taiwan faces, whether it be when interacting with the world or standing out to speak. In this program, we are going to answer some of the questions we often get asked as Taiwanese, such as "How does Taiwan participate in international society and promote the SDGs while being blocked from the UN?" or "What can you do for Taiwan to be part of the international community?
