DESCRIPTION:The Bowers Museum will proudly host a milestone presentation\, Highlights of Modern Taiwanese Art: A Focused Look by Chong-ray Hsiao and Chip Tomon Saturday\, June 1 at 1:30 pm\, free to the public. This presentation will examine the evolution ofTaiwanese art and artists from Japanese colonial era to the modern day. Special presenters Chip Tom\, Senior Curator for Heather James Fine Art\, and Professor Chong-ray Hsiao\, Professor of History at the National Cheng Kung University\, will offer keen insight into the groundbreaking work of monumental Taiwanese artists including Liao Shiou-ping\, “Father of Modern Print-Making\,” whose work is in the Bowers Museum’s own Permanent Collection. \nModern day Taiwanese artists are flourishing with unique expressions all their own\, but it took time and an even more unique history to get them there. Following a period of more than 50 years of Japanese occupation\, 1949 marked a major shift in Taiwan’s ability to communicate and connect with the world. This shift opened up a floodgate of ideas and exchanges through which artists from all over China came together for the first time in new and exciting ways in Taiwan. This exchange expanded globally\, with time\, and resulted in important exchanges with the United States.
