KANO is a 2014 Taiwanese baseball film directed by Umin Boya and co-produced by Wei Te-Sheng (director of Cape No.7, the second highest grossing film in Taiwanese history, and the epic Warriors of the Rainbow). KANO is crowd-pleasing inspirational film, which has won the Audience Award at the 2014 Osaka Asian Film Festival, and the Audience Award at the 2014 Taipei Film Festival. It was an Official Selection at the 2014 New York Asian Film Festival and is a Best Picture Nominee for the 2014 Golden Horse Awards.
Its immense popularity and positive reception has brought such a spotlight to Taiwan’s history under Japanese colonial rule that even China is rumored to possibly boycott the Golden Horse Awards because of this film’s nomination.
Did you miss October’s screenings of KANO when it toured in limited US cities nationwide with producer Wei Te-Sheng? This is your chance to catch it again in a few more major cities where Director Umin Boya will also be in attendance.
SYNOPSIS:
Under Japanese rule, an underdog high school baseball team from southern Taiwan defeats the heretofore superior northern teams and wins a rare opportunity to represent the colony in the 1931 empire-wide tournament. Comprised of Japanese, Han Chinese, and native Taiwanese players, “Kano,” the Kagi Nourin School team, must integrate the ethnically mixed roster and make the best of its unique strengths to not just survive but thrive in the elite league.
