Jason Chen (@theformosacoffee) is a Taiwanese coffee roaster based in New York. "I was surprised how few people, even coffee roasters, knew about Taiwan coffee farms," he says. "I visited the 2018 Coffee Festival in New York, went around chatted with as many roasters as I could to see if they knew anything about Taiwan coffee. I was shocked that out of about 30 roasters and importers I spoke to, none did. Honestly, that gave me mixed feelings. I felt excited and worried, not knowing if this super niche segment was worth risking my money and time. It took another year of research, talking to family, and planning to become the first US roaster to specialize in Taiwan coffee before I had the courage to decide. In January 2020, after almost three years of planning my coffee roasting business went live." ⁠

A thoughtful reflection on Jessica J. Lee’s “Two Trees Make a Forest” by Yi Shun Lai @yishunlai for @electricliterature: “The island holds both migrant and endemic species,” Lee writes early on in the book, in her sure, professorial, hand. Her botanical expertise makes itself present with every single scientific name for the plants I only know by their colloquial monikers. I know Taiwanese flora by names like “crazy flower” or “shy plant”; she has Dendrocalamus latiflorus and Diplofatsia at her disposal. And yet, for all her multilingualism with plants, Lee focuses early on Mandarin, calling it her mother’s tongue, referring to Taiwanese only a few times in her book. As I read, awe over her intimate knowledge of Taiwan’s flora and geographical history mixed with a burgeoning rage at the absence of Taiwanese throughout the book. Through these prizes and virtual events, we hope to foster community and discussion with writers like you, and to encourage and support your work. ⁠

As Ho Chie Tsai @hochie71, founder of TaiwaneseAmerican.org said, “I hope one day this leads to a Taiwanese American authors, writers, journalists, and storytellers conference of some sort. I seriously think we might get to that point within a few years.” ⁠

Created in collaboration with Taiwanese American author Charles Yu, the Betty L. Yu and Jin C. Yu Creative Writing Prizes are intended to encourage and recognize creative literary work by Taiwanese American high school and college students, and to foster discussion and community around such work. ⁠

The inaugural judges, Charles Yu and Shawna Yang Ryan, have finalized deliberations. All entrants can expect to hear back by end of week.⁠

"Although only a few could be recognized, we were impressed by the depth, creativity and effort in many of the entries, and are grateful to all of the entrants for sharing their work with us," writes Charles. In his interview, we get to hear about one of his favorite memories: "In 2018, I traveled with NBA Veteran Jeremy Lin to Taiwan and got an exclusive inside look as his personal videographer for his YouTube channel. As we walked out of the gates at Taoyuan airport at 3 AM that very first morning, over 300 of his passionate fans greeted us, cheering and waving his jerseys like flags to welcome him. Linsanity was very much alive and fired up!! He greeted everyone, signed all of the memorabilia, and took photos with all of his diehard fans. I was so proud to film Jeremy Lin and show everyone online the powerful love and support that Taiwan gives to one of their own." ⁠⠀
