Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards celebrates its 50th anniversary this month, and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO), in collaboration with the Smithsonian’s Freer Gallery, is proud to present the “50th Anniversary Salute to Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards” film series in DC. This series presents four previous winners of the coveted Golden Horse Awards: The Terrorizers (Edward Yang, 1986), Vive L’Amour (Tsai Ming-liang, 1994), No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti (Leon Dai, 2009) and GF*BF (Yang Ya-Che, 2012) featuring Gwei Lun Mei, winner of last year’s Golden Horse for Best Leading Actress.

This series will screen for FREE at the Freer’s Meyer Auditorium from Nov. 15-24. A tea reception featuring a variety of High Mountain Oolong Tea from Taiwan will be open to the public on Friday, November 15, from 5:30-7 pm prior to the first screening of the series, The Terrorizers.
The Golden Horse Awards is the oldest award show of its kind in the Chinese-speaking community. Founded in 1962 with the aim of promoting the Taiwanese film industry, the Golden Horse name comes from Taiwan’s two outlying islands, Kinmen and Matsu, whose names literally mean “Golden Gate” and “Ancestral Horse.” The awards were later expanded to accept all Chinese-language submissions from other parts of the world, such as Hong Kong, mainland China, Canada and the United States.
The “50th Anniversary Salute to Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards” film series presents four examples of pivotal, award-winning films from major Taiwanese director.
