Taiwanese Heritage Society of Houston (THSH), founded in 1988, is an IRS 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Its major missions include managing the Taiwanese Community Center and the Houston Taiwanese School of Languages & Culture, providing community services, and promoting public understanding of Taiwanese cultural heritage.
Professor Shien-ta Su, international renowned violinist, conducts a solo concert at the Stude Concert Hall of Rice University. Professor Su will entertain Taiwanese Americans and community friends with a variety of outstanding music pieces, including those by two Taiwanese composers, Tze-yuan Kuo and Tyzen Hsiao.
Professor Su is the Chairperson of the Music Department and the Director of both the Orchestral Percussion Music Research Institute and the Music Research Institute, at the Taipei National University of the Arts in Taiwan. In 1986 he graduated from L’Ecole Normal de Musique de Paris and received the Diplome Supcreieur de Concertist de Violin et Musique de Chambre, the highest degree certificate in violin performance studies. During his stay in France, Prof. Su was not only a member in the prestigious L’Ochstre des Concerts Lamoureux but also served as the concertmaster for the orchestra of L’Ecole Normal de Musique de Paris. In addition, Prof. Su won of the Alfred Cortot scholarship several times. His violin style is deeply influenced by two of his prominent teachers, H. Szeryng and G. Poulet. In 1989 Prof. Su made his Taiwan debut as the chief violinist in the Butterfly Violin Concerto. In 2000 he was invited to perform in the plaza of the presidential building where the inauguration ceremony of President Chen was held. From 2009 to 2010, he conducted four performances at the special exhibition – The Legend of Italian Violins: Treasures of Chi Mei Museum – in which he played fifteen distinctive violins, causing major stir in the media. Over the years, he was frequently invited by Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra, Taipei Symphony Orchestra, and many other orchestras to perform in concertos all over the world, including the United States, Canada, Costa Rica, Taiwan, China, Russia, France, Belgium, Italy, Latvia, Czech, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Poland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Estonia. His graceful bowing skill and charming performance have earned him extremely high appraisal from many music critics in world media, such as Los Angeles Times, Boston Globe, France Echos, and Taiwan Music Monthly.
