The Taiwanese American Union at UCLA hosts their annual Taiwanese Culture Night on May 26, 2011 from 7-9pm. This year’s culture night is titled “A Soldier’s Ink.”

Our goal is to promote Taiwanese American culture throughout the community and provide Taiwanese students a place to express their creative talents while allowing students from similar backgrounds connect on a social level. Taiwanese Culture Night has always been the best way to express our view of contemporary Taiwanese culture. TCN aims to touch on cultural aspects of the past and present.

Unlike the U.S. and most countries today, military service is still mandatory for all able males in Taiwan and it is the duty of every Taiwanese male citizen. Our production will display the training process that every men has to go through. It will highlight many of the difficulties and emotional hardships that the trainees have to face and how they combat this with the help from their fellow brothers. As we’ve learned from many Taiwanese cinema and the older generations in our families, serving in the military is a huge part of Taiwanese culture that highlights growth, friendship, brotherhood, and family relationships. This is the type of experience that we want to portray to our audience since it shows the uniqueness of our Taiwanese culture.
