TaiwaneseAmerican.org is a proud supporter of the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival, the premier festival of its kind in our community. Each year, thousands of fans, filmmakers, actors, producers converge upon several locations around the SF Bay area to watch wonderful films representing the diversity of Asian America.
This year, we are pleased to co-present two of the Taiwanese films being shown. Both were winners of the Taipei Golden Horse Awards – equivalent to America’s Academy Awards.
Come out and join the Taiwanese and Asian American communities at one of these screenings. We expect tickets to sell out early, so buy them well in advance:
WHEN LOVE COMES
Winner of Best Feature Film, Audience Choice Award, Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction at the prestigious Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival, WHEN LOVE COMES solidifies Chang Tso-Chi’s standing as Taiwan’s foremost chronicler of family relations and those living at the margins of society. Lai-Chuan is a free-spirited young woman on the cusp of turning 16 who lives with her mother, her father, her father’s second wife, and her developmentally disabled uncle Jie (among others). Crammed together in a Taipei flat but originally from Kinmen Island, the family struggles to run a small restaurant. Living in her own world even while surrounded by her family, Lai-Chuan daydreams, works idly at the restaurant, and sees her boyfriend in her spare time. When she discovers that she is pregnant, however, things quickly change. Her boyfriend immediately abandons her, and Lai-Chuan must turn to her family for help; whether they can, unfortunately, is another matter entirely.

THE FOURTH PORTRAIT
Winner of Best Director and Outstanding Taiwanese Film at Taiwan’s 2010 Golden Horse Awards, THE FOURTH PORTRAIT is a poetic and powerfully acted second feature from the exciting Taiwanese director Chung Mong-Hong (PARKING). A lovingly crafted story, the film blends the sweet, comedic moments of childhood with the more serious undertones of a disjointed family, making for one of the most impressive Taiwanese films this year. The film begins with 10-year-old Xiang patiently waiting beside his dying father’s bedside. After losing the only parental figure he’s known, Xiang is temporarily adopted by the school’s hardline caretaker, then reunited with his cold and inscrutable birth mother (Hao Lei, SUMMER PALACE). At home, cold turns to frigid through the presence of Xiang’s stepfather, who seems to be on the verge of a nervous breakdown. The caustic environment leads Xiang to befriend the local village idiot, and together they wander the countryside, committing petty theft. Meanwhile, Xiang is repeatedly visited by a ghostly figure, whom he believes to be his missing older brother. As he drifts through overcast days on the streets and bleak nights at his mother’s hostess bar, Xiang turns to painting to voice the quiet but significant developments in his coming of age.
